Africa

Content

Almost 1,000 works constitute the "Africa" circuit of the displays, organised by region. After having presented the archaeological masterpieces in the collection, the tour begins with the arts of Mali and particularly those of Dogon country. It continues with the masks and statuary of West Africa to conclude with a set of works from Benin and Nigeria.

The arts of Cameroon are presented next, constituted through the Harter Bequest, followed by a set of magical objects from the Congo. The famous Kota and Fang reliquary guardians open the section on the arts of central and southern Africa. Funerary posts from east Africa and the Christian arts of Ethiopia complete this geographical presentation. The tour concludes with a number of films, texts and documents on these works and their civilisations.
