The Plains Indians

Artists of Earth and Sky

The 140 objects and artworks in this volume offer an unprecedented vision of the aesthetic traditions of the Plains Indians from the 16th to the 20th century. The continuity in form and design is revealed by the great variety of objects and media: paintings and drawings, sculptures of stone, wood, antlers and shells, costumes painted in figurative and geometric patterns, richly-decorated and highly symbolic clothing, embroideries using porcupine needles and glass pearls, feather headdresses, ceremonial and sculptural objects and other composite assemblages created from various materials and techniques characteristic of the arts of the Plains.
