The hairy Ainu, so called from the wealth of black wavy hair on the head and body, formed the primeval population of the Japanese islands. The skin is light brown in color, the face broad, with large, horizontal eyes. Il s'agit ici d'une des sculptures qui ont été commandées à Malvina Hoffman à l'occasion de l'exposition organisée par le Field Museum of Natural History le 6 juin 1933, intitulée "The Races of Mankind" et qui s'est tenue dans le Chauncey Keep Memorial Hall jusqu'en 1969.
