Guide book

Musée du quai Branly

Content

A simple and practical guide which aims to help you appreciate this new cultural enclave, where the former collections of the musée de l'Homme and the musée des arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie have been brought together. It begins with a portfolio section about the Museum's exceptional architecture designed by Jean Nouvel, before exploring the permanent collections, organised into four geographical zones: Oceania, Asia, Africa and the Americas. This guide also serves as an introduction to the artworks and the cultures, to the peoples and the civilisations, by relating ethnological aspects to artistic and representational aspects. The information is presented in an accessible manner, whilst also offering more detailed content. The main text is divided into sequences that relate to the artefacts in question. These include sections on maps, transversal themes, historical and geographical aspects, focuses on particular objects or techniques that provide interpretational clues.

The Museum’s other functions and spaces are also explored. These include the auditorium and media library, as well as the services that are available to visitors, such as the restaurant, the bookshop, the garden and the terrace. In addition to its function as a guide and a souvenir of the time spent at the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, this lavishly illustrated guidebook also provides a lively and comprehensible introduction to the art and culture of the continents that are at the heart of the musée du quai Branly's existence.

This guidebook was written by the Museum’s team of curators and by internationally recognised specialists.
