Notes
Publié à l'occasion d'une exposition ayant eu lieu au Museum Fünf Kontinente, Munich, du 1er juillet 2016 au 29 janvier 2017 ; 'From 1847 until 1901, the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico witnessed the so-called Castle War. The Guerra de Castas was a war of independence against the 'white' upper class, fought by the Mayan population, which stood up against harsh tribute extraction, forced hard labor, and increasing land grabs. The Maya lost the war, and the repercussions of that conflict are still felt by their descendants, who continue to be disadvantaged economically, socially, and culturally. The Canadian photographer Serge Barbeau, who has been living in Mexico for many years, has captured the dignity of the Maya of Yucatan, in touching portraits, and has documented their will toward independence. His photos reveal their deep-rootedness in their faith, which is a blend of their Mayan heritage and Christianity.'--Page 4 of cover
