The Office of Indian affairs was subordinate to the War department until it was transferred to the Department of the interior by act of Congress, approved March 3, 1849. First report covered period March to November 2, 1824. Annual reports have been issued by the officer in charge since November 30, 1825. The office of commissioner of Indian affairs (head of the office of Indian affairs) was created by act of Congress, approved July 9, 1832. The earlier reports (1824-183?) are to be found only in the executive documents of the Senate and House of representatives. The earliest report in the separate form in the Library of Congress has title and imprint: Annual report of the commissioner of Indian affairs, transmitted with the message of the President at the opening of the third sessio of the Twenty-fifth Congress. 1838-1839. Washington, Blair and Rives printers, 1838 (report dated, November 25, 1838) ; 'No accompanying papers are now published with Annual report, nor have they been so publised since 1909.'
