With the gamelan ensemble Garasi Seni Benawa and the orchestra Le Balcon
A beguiling combination of a silent black-and-white film, a gamelan ensemble and a symphonic orchestra, Setan Jawa is a complete show in itself. Against the backdrop of a décor portraying colonial Indonesia, the avant-garde Indonesian film-maker Garin Nugroho tells the story of Setio, a poor villager who makes a deal with the devil to win the heart of the rich Asih.
Sublimated by the musical scores of Rahayu Supanggah and Iain Grandage, the images are delicate and mystically powerful with a pulsating musical dialogue embodied by twenty-eight first-rate musicians.
