Specially developed for touring, this exhibition invites visitors to discover more than 170 masterpieces of Pacific art from the collection of the Musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac. This unique collection reveals the cultural immensity of Oceania, with its plural identities and numerous connections.
This proposal adopts a thematic approach to Oceanian cultures. The itinerary invites visitors to cross the Great Ocean, from the earliest periods of settlement, moving from west to east across these water-based territories. The dual movement of Space and Time then structures the progression of the visit, highlighting:
-
The interaction of objects with specific places (ancestral houses, dance grounds, ceremonial platforms, or the forest),
-
The role of these objects in relationships between human groups—whether complementary or antagonistic—as well as in their interactions with supernatural entities,
-
Their value as insignia and markers of status within Oceanian societies,
-
The importance of relationships between men and women in these societies,
-
The attention given to transmission, genealogy, and lineage, which guarantee the continuity of cultures.
Two transversal threads, presented sequentially, will form the backbone of the itinerary around the themes of performance and the body, as the arts of Oceania stand at the crossroads of the material and the immaterial, the visual and the verbal.
