'Kings and Queens of Africa. Forms and Figures of Power' reveals the artistic and visual power of Africa from the 11th to the 21st centuries, emphasising the temporal powers embodied by kings, chiefs and their female counterparts, as well as those connected with the spiritual world.
Kings and Queens of Africa. Forms and Figures of Power is organised into about thirty sequences that alternate between themes of power and cultural, historical and geographical focuses, nearly twenty African reference kingdoms are evoked, from West to East, through the centre and South of the continent. The selection of objects connects with and responds to each other, creating echoes across time and space.
Combined with a selection of contemporary artworks, Kings and Queens of Africa. Forms and Figures of Power highlights the ongoing relevance of the theme of power, either in dialogue with or in counterpoint to the history of the kingdoms evoked.
