This is an evening dedicated to the music of the Pacific, a sensory voyage to discover this world through their artistic and musical productions.
EVENT REPLAY ON THE MUSEUM'S YOUTUBE CHANNEL
To mark the release of two major publications on Pacific music in 2021, we would like to present the outlines of these works. Through contributions from anthropologists, ethnomusicologists, artists and musicians, the conference-concert examines the decisive role that music and performance have played in the Oceanian "renaissance" process, and continue to play today. The popular and hybrid musical productions that have taken shape in the Pacific - such as kaneka, gita gisalo, jawaiian music, hip-hop, string band, island reggae - represent vectors of emancipation for the peoples of Oceania, instruments for asserting local and transpacific identity, and at the same time spaces for connections and encounters. Through the prism of music, the speakers will take us on a journey across the Pacific, from Hawaii to Australia (via New Caledonia, Guam, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Vanuatu), to tell a different story of political and cultural engagement in these communities.
The evening will also be an opportunity to present the MQB media library's acquisition of a collection of kaneka music and reflect on the Carnet Kanak exhibition. In fact, the birth of the kaneka musical movement in the 1980s was part of the process of collecting and promoting New Caledonia's heritage started by Jean-Marie Tjibaou and celebrated by the MQB exhibition, which recounts the exceptional mission of the Inventaire du Patrimoine Kanak Dispersé (IPKD).
The event will close with a performance by young Kanak artists.
