Although the study of material culture is at the heart of archaeological issues, most of the research conducted focuses on one type of material (wood, bone, flint, metal, ceramic) with no real inter-disciplinary dialogue. Working with wood and other animal-based materials often involves common actions, tools and techniques even though the properties of each material require the craftsperson to make adaptations. This study day on 'Working with Organic Matter' aims to initiate a dialogue between archaeologists specialised in woodwork and other specialists in bone-based materials based on common themes (subsistence, production of objects) on different scales, both macro- and microscopic.
