Aesthetics of the Amur River

Decorative arts of Far-Eastern Siberia

Content

Among the spectacular Asian collections of the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, the ancient objects collected in the regions of Far-Eastern Siberia at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, showcasing the interaction between humans, the wilderness and the spiritual world, are of particular interest.

The exhibition presents the decorative art of the peoples of the Amur, giving meaning to the specific ontological construction of these peoples in their relationship with the visible and invisible world. From protective dresses made of fish skin to ritual accessories adorned with symbolic scrolls and spirals, to everyday objects combining materials and natural ornaments boasting a raw refinement: these eclectic and unknown objects from the basin of the Amur River offer both aesthetic elegance and ethnographic interest. Today they are counted among the jewels of the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac collection.
