This exhibition presents a set of 22 masks from the archaic and tribal cultures of the Himalayas from the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac collection.
Some of the oldest masks are ancestral figures originally associated with funerary rites as well as with shamanic practices. Others appear in dances and pantomimes invoking tribal traditions and myths. Still others are worn by Lamaic jesters performing comic interludes in traditional religious theatre.
