Charles Ratton

Content

An expert, dealer and collector, Charles Ratton left his mark on the history of the reception of “primitive” arts. Through his connections with multimedia artists and photographers (Dubuffet, Man Ray), his work as a specialist in art activities and the exhibitions he organised, he contributed to the shift in status of works from Africa, the Americas and Oceania. From “objects for anthropological research”, these became “objects of art” in the 1930s, before finally acquiring the status of “masterpieces” in the 1960s, both in France and the United States.
